Topics for detailed study will include Japanese nationalism and popular culture; manga and queer reading; social discourses about “Otaku”; Disability representation in fiction; gender in video games; Asian queer representations in media outside Asia; kawaii culture and queer femininity; feminist and queer arguments on Boy’s love and “obscenity.” This course will explore:1. What kind of discussions are being conducted in Japanese/Asian studies on popular culture2. How to academically discuss popular cultural works3. How useful perspectives of gender and sexuality are to analyze cultural representationsThis course requires students to make at least one presentation (10-15 minutes) summarizing a reading assignment in English to the class and to actively participate in class as well as submitting a final term paper (1500-2000 words). Students will expose themselves to a wide range of cultural works, traditions, and practices of Japan in a roughly chronological order. The course will also give students an overview of the scope of approaches and concepts in recent studies in humanities and explore various perspectives from which diverse cultural artifacts can be interpreted or analyzed. Through this course, students will learn how to critically approach various texts and images concerning or produced in Japan, both premodern and modern. By the end of the course, students are expected to have gained a basic understanding of cultural history of Japan and to be able to examine a wide variety of cultural artifacts ranging from literary works to representations in mass media, while avoiding cultural essentialism, being attentive to socio-historical contexts and complicated discourses on class, gender, and ethnicity. The final grade for the course will be determined by evaluation in the following areas:Class participation (discussions, lecture reaction, in-class reaction paper writing, etc.): 25%Presentations: 25% Mid-term exam: 25 % Final exam: 25 % 教科書は使用しない。/Will not use textbook 第一回授業日に行う。/Will conduct guidance at first time Introduction to Comparative Education This course is designed to learn educational systems and topics in different countries including Japan, consider the role of international organizations in the field of education, and familiarize with the approaches of comparative education research. The topics to be covered include the moral, social, and cultural development in primary schooling, schoolteachers, gender and education, ethnic minorities in education, higher education in a globalized world, educational transfer/policy borrowing, and education during/after the COVID-19 pandemic. We will mainly focus on so-called “developed” countries in this course, so if you are interested in “developing” countries, other courses such as development studies or development education are recommended.In Week 1, the instructor will talk about the course objectives, schedule, and assessment, as well as introduce comparative educational research and the relevant work by international organizations such as the UN and OECD. It will be held online.From Week 2, there will be a short lecture and a group/class discussion. The reading materials will be shared on the Google Drive folder. The URL for the shared folder will be notified via UTOL.Students will be able to ・understand the similarities and differences between the educational systems in several countries, and・critically discuss the issues in the field of comparative education research. Final Paper 100%A student is expected to pick up a question from the list of the essay questions and answer it with a focus on two or three countries (societies). The class attendance will not be counted in your assessment; however, the group/class discussion will be helpful to answer the question in Final Paper. Thus, your attendance is highly encouraged.
