Classic crime fiction focuses on detectives and the mechanics of the crime committed, while later iterations of the genre focus on character studies and character types, atmosphere and suspense, and the motives of the criminal. Crime fiction may also include depictions of legal processes and prominent figures such as judge (and jury), witnesses, and police. The genre continues to evolve today , crossing over into various other areas of speculative fiction, such as horror and sci-fi. This course will provide an overview to several of the major subsets of crime fiction. In addition to literary fiction, students will be introduced to historical contexts, social criticism, cultural theory, and scientific theories that suit the story we are discussing. Students who want to understand legal, psychological, scientific, or historical aspects of literature are encouraged to take this course. Many authors, like Stephen King and Shirley Jackson, not only use the haunted house as a symbol or motif in their work, but even go so far as to personify the home. Why are Americans so fascinated by haunted homes? This course will examine short fiction and cultural studies readings on hauntings in domestic spaces. Covering a wide range of stories from the 19th into the 20th century and up to contemporary times, we will try to understand how aspects of American history and culture, such as wars, slavery, gender inequality, and cult-like movements (such as Spiritualism and its offshoots) contribute to stories about haunted homes.
