Indeed, technology opens new possibilities for access to education for students with disabilities, personalize learning with AI tools, and expand opportunities for intercultural education through virtual exchange, to name a few, However, with this expansion comes a range of dilemmas, including the increasing entanglement of public education with private interests, issues of user privacy and surveillance, the pedagogical challenges of educating for critical media literacy, the mental health implications of social media, and the reproduction of inequalities through the ‘digital divide’. In this course we will take a sociological perspective to explore these and other issues in the rapidly evolving world of ‘EdTech’. We will engage with leading scholarship in the field, representations in the media, and our own educational experiences to explore both instructor-and student-directed topics. Students will develop skills in academic reading, writing, presentation, and discussion. Weekly written assignments and active participation in class: 70%, Individual final research-based report: 30% (*completion of all components are required to receive a passing grade) 教科書は使用しない。／Will not use textbook 特に行わない。／Will not conduct guidance Ghosts and Hauntings in Fiction and Folklore This course is an introduction to fiction and stories that concern hauntings, ghosts, and warped spaces in fiction and cinema, across sources from different geographical locations, including Japan, America (indigenous and immigrant/colonial), Britain, the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe. In this class, students will approach stories about ghosts through the lens of cultural studies and historical contexts. In addition to stories about ghosts and haunted spaces, students will be introduced to social criticism, religious studies, gender theory, cultural theory, and scientific theories that suit the story we are discussing. Students who want to understand psychological, scientific, or historical aspects of literature are encouraged to take this course.
