The aim of the course is to provide a general overview of American society, and strengthen the English abilities of students comprehensively. This will be accomplished through (a) reading assignments, (b) writing exercises, (c) discussion, (d) presentations, and (e) the completion of a research project. During the semester, we will explore the following themes: (1) capitalism and the market economy; (2) race, gender, and inequality; (3) the culture of individualism and its relation to community; (4) politics and religion; (5) nationalism and the crisis of American democracy. Cumulatively, studying these topics will help us understand why the United States today is such a divided society. Through the close reading of texts and discussion in class, we will think about what it means to live in a democratic society and the challenges confronting the American democratic project. Students do not have to purchase anything. 特に行わない。／Will not conduct guidance Gender and sexuality in Japan The aim of this course is to enable students to read and critically engage with academic articles written in English about gender issues. In class, students will discuss topics related to Japanese youth, namely gender equality, LGBT issues and sexual harassment, and compare how Japan and other countries perceive these issues.
