The main goal of the course is to reach an understanding of the current situation of America as a highly divided society. We will read sociological texts about American life from different eras. The readings will discuss important themes such as the changing American character, individualism and its relation to community, racial inequality, and cultural/political resentment. We will begin with books like The Lonely Crowd and Habits of the Heart to explore the tensions that exist between individual identity and social life. We will then look at more recent works that reveal how these problems are still unresolved and remain very relevant in the present time. Through close reading of texts and discussion in class, students will think about what it means to live in a democratic society and the challenges that are confronting the American democratic project.
