We will address topics such as: aesthetics and staging, contents of plays, historical background, relation between classical and contemporary performing arts and culture, as well as the social structure of the world of performing arts and their relevance for contemporary society. The readings will introduce students to theories and methods of analyzing artistic discourse and help them to situate their findings in the wider context of Japanese society and culture. Students will be asked to undertake two pieces of work for assessment in addition to their participation in class discussion. • Class presentation. 20% A class presentation of no more than 20 mins that responds to the themes and readings for that work. The presentation should use PowerPoint or similar presentational media. • An essay of approx. 10 pages on a topic covered in the course. 65% Students are free to develop their own essay topic based on the course content in discussion with the professor. All essay topics should be approved by the professor before starting work. Due dates of essays will be discussed in the beginning of the semester. My preference is for your essay to be submitted as a word and a pdf document. 教科書は使用しない。/Will not use textbook 特に行わない。/Will not conduct guidance Introduction to Comparative Education This course is designed to learn educational systems and topics in different countries including Japan, consider the role of international organizations in the field of education, and get familiarize with the approaches of comparative education research. The topics to be covered include the moral, social and cultural development in primary schooling, schoolteachers, minorities in education, higher education in a globalized world, educational transfer/policy borrowing and education during/after the Covid-19 pandemic. We will mainly focus on so-called “developed” countries in this course, so if you are interested in “developing” countries, other courses such as development studies or development education are recommended. In Week 1, the instructor will talk about the course objectives, schedule, assessment, as well as introduce some comparative educational research and the relevant work by the international organizations such as UN and OECD. After Week 2, the students will be expected to read the assignments about the topic for each week before the class. There will be a short lecture about the topic and a group/class discussion. The reading assignments will be shared on UTOL. Students will be able to –understand the similarities and the differences of the educational systems in several countries, and –critically discuss the issues in the field of comparative education research. Final Paper 100% A student is expected to pick up a question from the list of the essay questions and answer it with a focus on two or three countries (societies). The class attendance will not be counted in your assessment; however, the group/class discussion will be helpful to answer the question in Final Paper.
