The aim of this course is to learn the basics of how to read a poem, focusing on poems from the 20th and 21st centuries. We will consider different ways of reading and and interpreting poetry: learning on how to read texts, paying attention to traditional and revolutionary forms, and thinking about poetic genres. We will also consider how a poet's background and influences may change the way they write, their subject matter, and their intended audience. We will first reexamine how authors who are well-known (canonized), such as Robert Frost, Karl Shapiro, and Langston Hughes. We will then examine poets such as Joy Harjo, N. Scott Momaday, or Li-Young Li, as well as contemporary writers such as Hyejung Kook and Julia Kolchinsky Dasbach. The course will draw on fiction, essays and autobiographical writing related to the colonial encounter between Britain and the Caribbean. It will be based mainly on the work of the British writer Andrea Levy. Her writing has focused on Britain's long relationship with the Caribbean and the erasure of that history in contemporary Britain. However, her writing lends itself to broader universal and contemporary social themes. Students will learn to engage with the language and ideas in the selected texts and to explore their responses to the readings in class. Readings for this class will be available online or will be distributed in class.
