Together we will read Art Spiegelman's masterpiece of Holocaust biography in comic book form, Maus I and II. Maus brings together two very powerful narratives, that of Art's father, Vladek, who survived Auschwitz, and Art's struggle as the child of a survivor to understand the enormity of the destruction the Holocaust wrought on the Jews and on his family. Each class will have a lecture that situates the narrative in its historical context. No prior knowledge of either Judaism or the Holocaust is necessary. Students are encouraged to ask questions and critically think about the Holocaust and its legacy, both for the Jewish people, and for the world at large. Elie Wiesel, one of the most famous Holocaust survivors, said that "to listen to a witness is to become a witness." In this course, we will bear witness to Art's and Vladek's story, and to many other stories, too. Wiesel also said that "[the Holocaust] is not an example of man's inhumanity to man. It was man's inhumanity to Jews." In trying to understand this genocide, the most industrialized and methodical genocide in human history, we will also try to understand the role of antisemitism in the world, and what we need to do today to prevent such terrible violence from happening again.
