The aim of the course is to provide a general overview of American society, and strengthen the English abilities of students comprehensively. This will be accomplished through reading assignments, writing exercises, discussion, presentations, and the completion of a research project. During the semester, we will explore the following themes: (1) capitalism and the market economy; (2) race, gender, and inequality; (3) the culture of individualism and its relation to community; (4) politics and religion; (5) nationalism and the crisis of American democracy. Cumulatively, studying these topics will help us understand why the United States today is such a divided society. Through the close reading of texts and discussion in class, we will think about what it means to live in a democratic society and the challenges confronting the American democratic project.
