The course will draw on fiction, essays and autobiographical writing related to the colonial encounter between Britain and the Caribbean. It will be based mainly on the work of the British writer Andrea Levy. Her writing has focused on Britain's long relationship with the Caribbean and the erasure of that history in contemporary Britain. However, her writing lends itself to broader universal and contemporary social themes. Students will learn to engage with the language and ideas in the selected texts and to explore their responses to the readings in class. Readings for this class will be available online or will be distributed in class.
