Jones）、カレン・ラッセル（Karen Russell）、ヴィエト・タン・ウェン（Viet Thanh Nguyen）の4人の作家の作品を1本ずつ取りあげる予定です（それぞれ「大聖堂」、「鳩を育てた少女」、「証明」、「アメリカ人」）。舞台となる場所、時代、登場人物、扱われる主題や文章のスタイルなどは作家によって大きく異なります。個別の作品をなるべく楽しんで読みながら、多様で雑多な現代文学の魅力に触れ、合衆国の社会や小説の言語への理解を深める機会にしてください。 多読と部分的なパッセージの精読とを組みあわせて4本の作品を読み進め、ある程度の分量の英語を継続的に読む習慣と能力を身につけること、細部に注意を払って英文を精確に読めるようになること、会話文などから口語的な表現を学ぶこと、小説を分析的に読むおもしろさを実感してもらうことなどが授業の目標です。グループでのディスカッションや発表を中心に進めるため、受講生の主体的な参加を求める授業となります。あくまでも語学の授業なので、しっかり予習をして積極的に議論に参加してもらえるならば今まであまり小説を読んでこなかった人も含め、あらゆる学生の受講を歓迎します。2週目以降は毎回7〜10ページほどのペースで進行するので、毎週の予習にある程度の時間がかかることは覚悟してください。こちらからも補助教材の提供などをとおしてできるかぎりサポートします。教材はすべてPDFファイルと印刷物で提供します。履修予定の方は初回の授業から必ず出席してください。初回は予習は必要ありません。 ※学部の方針に従い、初回のみZoomでのオンライン授業、2回目以降は対面授業となります。 Introduction to 20th Century American Gothic Fiction This course is an overview introduction to American Gothic fiction from the 20th century. In this class, students will learn to read literature in an interdisciplinary way. They will approach American Gothic through the lens of American social issues and in the context of American history. In addition to stories, students may be introduced to history, social criticism, gender theory, cultural theory, and scientific theories that suit the story we are discussing. Students who want to understand psychological, scientific, or historical aspects of literature are encouraged to take this course. Writing Myth, Reading Culture: An Introduction to Folklore Studies This course will provide students with a foundation in working in English to conduct studies of folklore . Working through a series of comparative case studies, your class activities will be based around group discussions, presentations, in-class readings and student-led work - each designed to help develop your verbal and analytic skills in English language. Students will examine folklore from a cross-cultural perspective, exploring folktales, ghost stories, myths and legends from the geographical East and West. As well as assessing the role of folklore from both contemporary and historical viewpoints, the class will also introduce students to methodological approaches in the investigation of folklore. You will be required to write a research paper and give short presentations in English, as well as to undertake various homework tasks throughout the course (readings, creative assignments, compiling research etc.).
