You will be expected to develop your business English knowledge, including spoken and written communication and critical thinking skills, while learning various kinds of authentic English. In this course, students are expected to learn 1. Vocabulary and expressions for business English, especially for reading and listening, 2. Business English skills for effective spoken and written communication, 3. Strategic competence necessary for global business. By the end of this course, you will be able to: -Comprehend basic vocabulary and expressions for business English -Speak and write basic-level short sentences about business topics -Ask and answer questions about basic business issues in English, especially about intercultural business and management -Present your basic ideas about global business communication in English Exploring Controversial Topics The main objective is to get some practice using the English language by reading, writing, and talking about important or interesting issues individually and in groups. In regard to content, the course is built around a textbook which touches on a variety of social and cultural issues for university students to think about; its chapters include a short essay, a “comprehension check” exercise, a short dialog, and space for attaching or drawing a related illustration. For all but the first two class meetings (respectively, an online introduction to the course and coverage of one of the chapters to get a feel for how the classes will work), students will be assigned a chapter in the textbook to go through before coming to class, and during class time there will be two graded activities: (1) something written individually about the chapter topic, and (2) an oral presentation based on work done in small groups. Gender and youth in Japan ジェンダーから見る日本の若者 The aim of this course is to enable students to read and critically engage with academic articles written in English about gender issues. In class, students will discuss topics related to Japanese youth, namely gender equality, LGBT issues and sexual harassment.
