The course will draw on fiction and autobiographical writing related to the colonial encounter between Britain and the Caribbean. It will focus on the British writer Andrea Levy. Her work focuses on Britain's long relationship with the Caribbean and the erasure of that history in contemporary Britain. Students will learn to engage with the language and ideas in the selected texts and to explore their responses through discussions in class. Reading for this class will be available online or distributed in class. Special Topics for Social and Ethical Issues in the Sciences This course will provide an opportunity for students to develop speaking skills (discussion and presentation), writing skills, listening skills, and reading skills. The class will develop the above-mentioned skills through a variety of pre-class assignments, in-class activities, and/or post-class reflections. Possible topics used in this class will be decided based on the interests of the class, and can revolve around the following: - Social issues in space exploration - Social issues in energy production - Social issues in the management of earth resources - The ethics, culture, and politics of progress in the Sciences - New technology and ethics - Sustainability and green chemistry Students will read and watch/listen to a range of documents, reports, as well as reliable news and media sources.
