It often evokes a strong emotional response from readers. Poetry lends itself well to close readings and discussion because it uses language flexibly. Nature is one of the major themes of American writing. The aim of this course is to reconsider ways of reading and seeing nature in American poetry, particularly focusing on how ethnicity, race, and origin play a factor in a given poet's influences and use of natural imagery and symbolism. We will first reexamine how authors who are well-known (canonized) for their use of nature, such as Emily Dickinson, and Robert Frost, depict the natural world from an "American" perspective. We will then examine poetry from 20th century minority and immigrant groups. Finally, we will read contemporary poems. We will also discuss the different symbolism assigned to nature in poems, and the definition of "ecopoetics."
