Touching on monsters, unexplained/unexplainable events, parallel universes, and even ghosts, " Weird Fiction" is a genre that expresses both the anxieties of society and the human fascination for the unknown and inexplicable. This course is designed to engage students in interdisciplinary approaches to reading a text. This course also aims to teach students to deeply consider historical contexts when reading literature. Students will broadly consider how these stories deal with phobias and fascinations, but also consider historic issues in scientific ethics, colonialism, and racism. Students who want to understand psychological, historical, or scientific aspects of literature are encouraged to take this course. Geographies of Horror This course introduces students to the role of geography in literary and cinematic horror, exploring the ways in which writers and filmmakers have tried to imagine the supernatural qualities of the world that surrounds them. Starting with a short introduction to cultural geography, the classes will move on to discuss specific English language examples of gothic, monstrous and ecological horror. You will be studying the works of a range of influential writers, including; M.R. James, Lafcadio Hearn, and Ambrose Bierce. You will consider how the supernatural entities that appear in horror (ghosts, creatures, zombies etc.) can be seen to tell us about place and environment, expressing the complex relationship between people and the landscapes they inhabit. Using cultural geography as a backdrop for the course, students will examine the impact of horror on the way we think about and describe the threat of the natural world. A number of short readings will provide opportunities for weekly class discussions, written responses and brief presentations in English, and develop comprehension of the texts that accompany the course. Students will be expected to read excerpts and short stories in English on a weekly basis as preparation for in-class activities and presentations. Furthermore, this course aims to help you develop your analytical skills in working with English language texts and audio-visual materials.
