Touching on monsters, unexplained/unexplainable events, parallel universes, and even ghosts, "Weird Fiction" is a genre that expresses both the anxieties of society and the human fascination for the unknown and inexplicable. This course is designed to engage students in interdisciplinary approaches to reading a text. This course also aims to teach students to deeply consider historical contexts when reading literature. Students will broadly consider how these stories deal with phobias and fascinations, but also consider historic issues in scientific ethics, colonialism, and racism. Students who want to understand psychological, historical, or scientific aspects of literature are encouraged to take this course.
