In class, students will discuss topics related to Japanese youth, namely gender, sexuality and bodies/pop culture. Students will also collect data on a topic covered in class through readings or interviews/surveys. このクラスでは、日本の若者について英語で書かれた学術文献を読みます。内容は、ジェンダー・セクシャリティ・身体/ポップカルチャー等です。また、授業で触れた内容について実際に文献かインタビュー・アンケート等でデータ収集をします。 Zadie Smith の On Beauty 第一部 (‘kipps and belsey’) を読む 現代のイギリスの作家 Zadie Smith の長編小説 On Beauty (2005)の第一部 (‘kipps and belsey’) を読みます。有用語彙・構文および文法項目等を確認しながら、登場人物や場面の理解につとめ、物語の展開を追っていきます。 語り手や視点といった、小説に限らず文章を読む際に必要な英文読解のこつを学ぶとともに、現代に求められる教養や洞察力、思考力を養うことが重要な目的となります。 Improving English Language Presentation Skills Many of us sometimes have to make an oral presentation in front of an audience. This happens both at university and in the world outside, We also often need to know how to respond appropriately and constructively to presentations by others and take part in discussions. A lot of people find these activities stressful, especially if the language that is used is not their own first language. This course aims to give the participants practice in making and responding to oral presentations in English. Each student will make three English-language presentations during the course and all students are expected to participate actively in class discussions. Ethics in the Context of Major Religious Traditions The main objectives of this course are to gain some experience in reading and writing in English and to learn about major religious traditions mainly through the perspective of ethics. From the third scheduled class meeting, students will be expected to have read an assigned part of the book “An Interview with Prānavichāra about the Subject of Ethics” and to be prepared to answer some questions and/or to write a short essay during class time (in the classroom or online).
