This happens both at university and in the world outside, We also often need to know how to respond appropriately and constructively to presentations by others and take part in discussions. A lot of people find these activities stressful, especially if the language that is used is not their own first language. This course aims to give the participants practice in making and responding to oral presentations in English. Each student will make three English-language presentations during the course and all students are expected to participate actively in class discussions. Ethics in the Context of Major Religious Traditions The main objectives of this course are to gain some experience in reading and writing in English and to learn about major religious traditions mainly through the perspective of ethics. From the third scheduled class meeting, students will be expected to have read an assigned part of the book “An Interview with Prānavichāra about the Subject of Ethics” and to be prepared to answer some questions and/or to write a short essay during class time (in the classroom or online). In the event of a class being done online, the questions and/or essay prompt will be given near the beginning of the allotted time period and the answers and/or essay will be due near the end of it; in the case of conventional class meetings, the teacher is likely to provide additional or explanatory information before the questions and/or essay prompt are given. 「悪の陳腐さ」を通して人間性を探り、「自由」を思索する 本講義では、政治哲学者ハンナ・アーレントの提唱した概念である「悪の陳腐さ（the banality of evil）」と経済学者フリードリッヒ・フォン・ハイエクの提唱した「自由主義（liberalism）」について受講生とともに思索を深めていきたい。その作業を通して、複雑な思考を英語で理解し、英語で表現する力を涵養していく。 アーレントは、その著書『エルサレムのアイヒマン』において、悪を成すのは、特別な人間ではなく、むしろ普通の人間であると指摘している。もし、アーレントの言うように、凡人こそが邪悪な行為をするのだとすれば、我々は一様に悪に陥る可能性を秘めていることとなる。では、一体、どのようにすれば、我々は、「陳腐な悪」に陥らずに済むのだろうか。学期中、前半部では、様々な角度からこの問いに対して向き合っていくが、特に人間の自由意志について考えを巡らせることが多くなるだろう。 学期の後半は、ハイエクの著作・論文を精読していく。ハイエクの思想のエッセンスを理解することを通して、社会における個人の自由について思索を深めていきたい。ハイエクが人間の自由についてどう考えていたか、この理解を踏み台として受講生には自分の自由論を形作ってもらう。これが学期後半の到達目標である。 受講生は、TED Talkなどのインターネットの動画視聴あるいは英文のリーディングを課題として課されるので、事前に配布されるStudy Questionsに答えておくことが求められる。受講生自身が自分の手と頭を使って下調べをして講義に臨んでいることを前提にして、教員は授業を行う。 予習に限らず、自ら動き、自ら調べ、自ら考える。この姿勢なき者が、この授業に出ても意味はない。自分の頭で人間性の本質を理解しようと足掻き続けることを厭わないもの、「呻きつつ求める」ものを歓迎したい。 本講義の到達目標は、以下の通りである。 ・「悪の陳腐さ」「自由主義」について、その概念と由来・歴史的背景を正確に理解し、その概要を英語で説明できる。 ・「悪の陳腐さ」「自由主義」に関する自分の見解を、わかりやすい英語で説明できる。 ・「実践知」「自由意志」「決定論」「実存主義」「個人主義」といった概念を正確に理解し、その概要を英語で説明できる。また、それについての自分の見解を英語で述べることができる。 授業科目名 ター型） 授業科目名 ター型） 授業科目名 ター型） 担当教員 古田 直肇 担当教員 ミルズ アンソニー 担当教員 ポター サイモン 所属 曜限 英語 所属 曜限 英語 所属 曜限 英語 対象 理一(29,39) 対象 理一(29,39) 対象 理一(29,39)
