In order to do this, we will investigate and discuss a controversial topic in Japan today, that of immigration. While we will focus more specifically on immigration in Japan today, we will also look at “migration” from a historical and global perspective. Issues related to migration may include discussion about the Ainu communities in Japan, (dual)citizenship issues, ethnicity-based discrimination, benefits/pitfalls of immigration policies, etc. In addition to reading summaries in English, we will interview experts in the field as well as people who have experienced migrating to another country (both Japanese and foreigners.) The interviews will be recorded in advance, but students will be able to suggest questions they would like to ask the presenters. This is a unique opportunity for students to learn about this topic by listening to people who have had direct experiences with issues related to “migration”.
