Issues covered will include teaching and learning, internationalization, credentialism and employability, global rankings competition, academic freedom and knowledge production, and cross-border research collaboration. Emphasis will be placed on critically engaging with the tensions inherent in the varied social roles of world-class universities, institutions rooted in particular nation-states but active in international and global spaces. We will engage with leading scholarship in the field, representations in the media, and our own educational experiences to explore these and other student-directed topics. Students will develop skills in academic reading, writing, presentation, and discussion. Climate Change: Fact and Fiction In this course, students will learn about how literature and cinema handle the subjects of climate change and global warming in the genre of Science Fiction. In other words, we will study "Cli-Fi." Climate change is usually addressed from scientific, political, or social issues (e.g. poverty or food scarcity) perspectives, but in reality climate change and global warming have been important to science fiction since the turn of the 20th century. Through discussions, presentations, and written work, students will focus on how to approach climate change from an interdisciplinary standpoint, and develop their ideas about what steps society needs to take in the future. 楽園はここにある―Marcus B. Huish, Birket Foster: His Life and Work (1890) を読む あなたの楽園はどこにありますか。日本人の楽園はどこにあるのでしょう。イギリス人の楽園は村にあります。「愛すべき農村」のイメージ。都会と違って恐ろしいことは何も起きない、知らない者が侵入してくることもない、皆が皆をよく知っていて、親密な人間関係のなかで、多少の悶着も厄介ごとも、すべてユーモアと笑顔と、ゆるいキリスト教的モラルで乗り越えられていく、居心地のいい楽園。そこで永遠に繰り返される生産のサイクル。春、夏、収穫、冬。今年も、来年も、いつまでも。いつか、こんな薄汚れた都会なんか離れて、そういう「本当に確かなもの」を手に入れるんだ。都会に寓居するイギリス人はそうやって、永遠の楽園としてのカントリーライフを夢見ているのです。 そういう「楽園」のイメージを、ヴィクトリア朝イギリスの画家、バーケット・フォスター (1825-99）の挿絵や水彩画が描いています。心ざわめくようで、それでいてどこか懐かしい、気がかりな夢の断片のような、イングランドの田園風景。今回、このクラスでテキストにするのは、そのフォスターの絵をふんだんに掲載した、画集のようなエッセイ集のような、マーカス・ボーン・ヒューイッシュ (1843-1921) による1890年出版の本です。 130年も前の格調高い英文ですので、少々読みにくいと感じる方もおいでかもしれません。文体もそうですし、内容的にも古いので、ある程度は調べながら読んでいかないと、うまく読解することはできません。授業で行うのは、ですので、そういったこと、つまり、テキストの精読、ということになります。テキストをきちんと精読するためには作法があり、それはどんな文章であろうと変わりません―現代英語の気楽な読み物だろうと、ヴィクトリア朝イングランドの華美な文体だろうと、千年前に書かれた古英語の断片だろうと、同じです。この「作法」を、まあ、お伝えしたい、そういう授業です。 授業科目名 型） 授業科目名 型） 授業科目名 型） Christopher D.
