Jones）、アニー・プルー（Annie Proulx）、ヴィエト・タン・ウェン（Viet Thanh Nguyen）の4人の作家の作品を1本ずつ取りあげる予定です（それぞれ「大聖堂」、「鳩を育てた少女」、「ブロークバック・マウンテン」、「アメリカ人」）。舞台となる場所、登場人物、扱われる主題や文章のスタイルなどは作家によって大きく異なりますが、個別の作品をなるべく楽しんで読みながら、多様で雑多な現代文学の魅力に触れ、合衆国の社会や小説の言語への理解を深める機会にしてほしいと思います。 多読と部分的なパッセージの精読とを組みあわせて4本の作品を読み進め、ある程度の分量の英語を継続的に読む習慣と能力を身につけること、細部に注意を払って英文を精確に読めるようになること、会話文などから口語的な表現を学ぶこと、小説を分析的に読むおもしろさを実感してもらうことなどが授業の目標となります。グループでのディスカッションや発表を取り入れ、受講生の主体的な参加を求める授業となりますが、あくまでも語学の授業なので、しっかり予習をして積極的に議論に参加してもらえるならば今まであまり小説を読んでこなかった人も含め、あらゆる学生の受講を歓迎します。2週目以降は毎回7〜10ページほどのペースで進行するので、毎週の予習にある程度の時間がかかることは覚悟しておいてください。こちらからも補助教材の提供などをとおしてできるかぎりサポートします。教材はすべてpdfファイルで提供します。履修予定の方は初回の授業から必ず出席してください。初回は予習は必要ありません。 開講 授業科目名 （クラス指定セメスター型） 開講 授業科目名 （クラス指定セメスター型） 現代アメリカ合衆国の短編小説を読む Exploring the Human Condition through Dialogs The objectives are to get some practice using the English language by reading dialogs in which the speakers talk about important or interesting issues, writing answers to questions about chapter contents, and either preparing oral presentations and performing in front of the class or (in the event of the course having to be online) writing essays. In regard to content, the course is built around a textbook which contains dialogs that touch on subjects related to education, the natural sciences, the humanities, the social sciences, and technology; the chapters include a two-page dialog, a photograph with a thought-provoking caption, a written exchange between the editor and author of the book, and five general questions.
