The purpose is to illustrate how fundamental concepts as well as knowledge learned in the junior division can lead to interesting intellectual explorations in the senior division of the PEAK Japan in East Asia Program.The scheduled twelve lectures are on cultures, societies and histories of Japan and/or East Asia. The lecturers of these classes are involved in three disciplines in the College of Arts and Sciences: Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, Area Studies, and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences. The first class includes some guidance with a short lecture.教養学部教養学科の三分科（超域文化科学分科、地域文化研究分科、総合社会科学分科）の教員が交代で英語による講義を行う、レクチャー・シリーズです。教養学部英語コース(Programs in English at Komaba/PEAK)の文系後期課程コースである国際日本研究コース（International Program on Japan in East Asia）の紹介も兼ねた授業ですが、PEAK前期課程以外の学生も受講可能です。初回にガイダンスと詳細なスケジュールの説明を行います。 Introductory course in linear algebra Phenomena in natural and social sciences are usually complicated, and seldom described by linear equations. However, Linear Algebra is still powerful and effective in describing essential parts of the phenomena by linear approximation. Thus Linear Algebra has vast applications.Linear Algebra will further provide basics for considering linear spaces that appear in quantum mechanics or Fourier analysis. The ideas in Linear Algebra are broadly utilized in sciences and engineering, including agriculture, medicine, and economy, as well as in mathematics and physics.Although Linear Algebra is simple and clear in theory, one needs to be familiar with abstract concepts in mathematics to properly deal with it in practice. It is important for students to keep on deepening their understanding by working with exercise and related problems. Comparative History of Japanese Publishing Focusing on the development of periodicals, this course offers an overview of a history of publishing and reading culture in modern Japan up until the mid-20th century from a comparative historical perspective. A particular emphasis will be put on the transformations of forms of expressions of printed media in relation to other media, both verbal and visual, which in turn changed the relationship between representations of articles, readers, editors, and professional writers. Students are expected to learn to view the newspaper and the magazine as cultural products rather than as mere “sources” of information to be used for various studies.
