It also includes texts by colonial subjects, shedding light on their complex experience of Japan and its empire.By reading the proposed literary texts in conjunction with critical works on wider/ more theoretical topics, students will become aware of the way national literature expands its subject matter and style(s) to reflect changing geographical and political landscapes, while familiarising themselves with literary concepts such as travel writing, modernism, shi-shosetsu, etc. They will be able to use the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in this class to analyse a wide array of texts, literary and otherwise. Law and Political Science The objective of the course is to familiarize the students with the basics of law and political science. The course will be taught by specialists in these fields. Microeconomics This is an introductory course in microeconomics in which the primary goal will be to introduce students to formal economic models. Economics is a tremendously interesting discipline and touches on many fascinating aspects of life: What determines prices? Why do we have markets? Why do we think the market allocation is "good" in some sense? Should governments intervene in markets? Why do countries have different standards of living? Why do people within countries have different levels of income? What determines decisions about whether to work and invest in education? How do people behave in strategic situations? Although an introductory course cannot possibly hope to cover all aspects of economics, the idea is to introduce a broad range of the models used in economics and to get students to understand economists’ way of thinking. The course will be technical and cover the topics using formal models, which will be good in ways in which I will explain when we discuss educational investments. However, we will also play several games and have discussions based on readings to illustrate the principles involved. Introduction to Japanese Social Theory Using the textbook specifically aiming at bridging a longstanding gap between Eastern and Western social theory, this course will offer an opportunity for students to explore the rich diversity of social-theoretical critique in contemporary Japanese social theory.
