As a survey course, the content will focus on major historical events such as the Meiji Restoration, the colonization of Korea, the rise of fascism, the fifteen-year war, the postwar economic recovery, and the bursting of the bubble in the 1990s. The use of translated primary sources and films will be used to supplement the readings. The objective is to offer students a traditional historiography of Japan and to introduce them to prominent historical figures through readings of primary sources. Thus the structure of the course will follow the familiar narrative of western modernization, militarization and the postwar economic miracle so that students will have a strong foundation on which to later form a critique of this history in their senior courses. China's Economic Reform and Globalization This course focuses on China's on-going economic reform and globalization. In this course, students will study the historical meaning of China’s "Reform and Open-door" since 1978, her socio-economic changes caused by reforms, and challenges China is facing in its economic development. The course will also cover some current issues. Students will build a foundation which is required to understand the second largest economy in the world. The course will be conducted in English. The course will cover the following topics: a) China's political economy, b) reasons of successful economic development, c) challenges China is facing, d) impact of China's rise for the rest of the world, e) China's potential to be a leader of the world order, and f) current issues (political events, US-China relationship, currency policy etc). Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) This course is an introduction to Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) as an emergent field of study. It focuses on LSTS attempt to (re)think the constitutive and legal framework of democracies in relation to contemporary scientific and technological developments that seem to confront individuals with irreversible decision-making processes with a major impact on their lives. Through interactive lectures and case studies, students explore the multifaceted interplay existing between law, science, technology, ethics and society, taking technological developments (in both life sciences and information sciences) and their consequences as a starting point. In so doing, students acquire a robust grasp of why law and ethics need to keep pace with scientific and technological innovation, and how to address the growing gap between emerging technologies and legal-ethical oversight. Introduction to Economic Policy This course is designed to supplement a standard introductory course of economics and will discuss some of the fundamental concepts of economics, with a focus on policy evaluation and analysis. Drawing on the basics of microeconomics with a reference to some more contemporary frameworks (asymmetric information, game theory, behavioral economics, etc.), the course will provide conceptual foundations for evaluating various types of economic policy, including trade policy, antitrust policy, policy of public good provision (environment, knowledge, etc.), and macroeconomic policies. While the knowledge of advanced mathematics is not required for course participation, the students should note that the lectures will include discussions of some mathematical economic models. Meanwhile, although the course mainly targets students who have already studied introductory economics, it sets no prerequisites for registration and is open to all students.
