The speakers will join the class by videoconference to talk about their experiences related to such topics as gender equality, intercultural communication, mental health issues, animal rescue, or provide insights about their experience doing graduate studies at the university of Tokyo or in another country, for instance. The class will also include a special panel session with Japanese and foreign speakers discussing their experience living in a different country. Students will be encouraged to ask questions of each speaker, discuss their impressions in small groups, and perform other small exercises in English. The objective of this course is to expose students to English as a lingua franca, the common language that enables us to converse with people who come from different cultures and speak different languages. The course aims specifically to expose students to different English accents (including non-native accents), to interact directly with the various speakers and to observe interactions among speakers during the panel session. By the end of this course, students should have considerably improved their listening skills and be able to exchange ideas in English with peers and presenters. "Success": From Aristotle to Zuckerberg In this course, we will study "success" principles as understood by Western thinkers and innovators ranging from philosophers in Classical Greece to contemporary business professionals. The purpose of the course, besides being to expose students to life questions that date back to ancient times and the ideas of the most influential thought leaders of our own era, is to help participants formulate their own definition of "success," set concrete and achievable goals, improve their levels of self-confidence and self-awareness, and become more effective in their personal, academic, and work lives. Online Discussion This class will focus on improving English-language reading and writing skills through the medium of text-based online discussions. The reading texts will be chosen from discussions that have taken place in the comments sections of the Hacker News website. The writing will take the form of online discussions among students online using a similar text-based BBS. The topics for both the readings and the students’ written discussions will be chosen based on students' interests. (While most of the discussions on Hacker News are about technical, IT-related topics, we will focus on discussions of more general topics.)
