We will first cover some of the major philosophical approaches to ethical issues, such as virtue theory, utilitarianism, and others. With this as background, students will be presented with an ethical issue, read about it, and discuss the arguments in class. 開講 (クラス指定セメスター型) 未来学入門 ここでいう「未来学」とは，未来と向き合うために教養人としてどのように現在を生きたら良いかに関わる見識を指す。現在の傾向から未来の状態を予測する通常の未来学と違って，逆に想定される未来をもたらすには今どうあるべきかを考える backcasting の手法である。また，社会全体の体制がどうあるべきかではなく，それを構成する個人の内面を問題とする。科学者のモラルまたは一般人の科学知識が大いに問われる昨今，教養人が当然知っておいてよい見識である。 この授業では，数学者・生物学者・科学哲学者であるJ.Bronowskiの著書A Sense of the Future (1977, MIT Press)に所収された５つのエッセーを読み，そうした「未来学」のイロハを学びつつ，未来への向き合い方と現在の生き方を考えていきたい。授業で扱うテーマは，“A Sense of the Future”（未来と向き合う感覚），“The Creative Process”（創造のプロセス），“On Art and Science”（文芸と科学について），“The Reach of Imagination”（想像力が及ぶ範囲），“The Logic of Nature”（自然の論理）の５つのうち４つであり，こうした見識は当然ながら文理の垣根などない。また，やや古い著書ではあるが色褪せることもなく，古くて新しい普遍的なテーマを掘り起こす意味がある。 開講 (クラス指定セメスター型) Ethics in the Context of Major Religious Traditions The main objectives of this course are to gain some experience in reading and writing in English and to learn about major religious traditions mainly through the perspective of ethics. In regard to content, from the third scheduled class meeting, students will be expected to have read an assigned part of the book “An Interview with Prānavichāra about the Subject of Ethics” and be prepared to answer some questions and/or to write a short essay during class time. In the case of conventional class meetings, the teacher is likely to provide additional or explanatory information before the questions and/or essay prompt are given; in the event of a class being done online, the questions and/or essay prompt will be given near the beginning of the allotted time period (and, in some cases where there will be more than one task, a bit later during class time), and the answers and/or essay will be due near the end of it. 開講 (クラス指定セメスター型) Literature and Social Criticism In this course, students will learn to read literature through the lens of social issues. Students will read several short stories by American author Shirley Jackson such as "The Lottery" and "Flower Garden" and examine theoretical, political, and historical contexts that underpin the stories. In addition to the stories, they will be introduced to social criticism and cultural theory on race and politics from the 1940s and 1950s. In their discussions, presentations, and written work, students will focus on how to approach literature from an interdisciplinary standpoint, and how to deeply read a story for its context and multiple meanings.
