Working through a series of comparative case studies, your class activities will be based around group discussions, presentations, in-class readings and student-led work - each designed to help develop your verbal and analytic skills in English language. Students will examine folklore from a cross-cultural perspective, exploring folktales, ghost stories, myths and legends from the geographical East and West. As well as assessing the role of folklore from both contemporary and historical viewpoints, the class will also introduce students to methodological approaches in the investigation of folklore. You will be required to write a research paper and give short presentations in English, as well as to undertake various homework tasks throughout the course (readings, creative assignments, compiling research etc.). The class will be based on in-class discussion, written responses and presentation of ideas in English. Geographies of Horror This course will introduce students to the role of geography in cinematic and literary horror, exploring the ways in which filmmakers and writers have tried to imagine the supernatural qualities of the world that surrounds them. Starting with a short introduction to cultural geography, the classes will move on to discuss specific English language examples of gothic, monstrous and ecological horror. You will be studying the works of a range of influential writers, including; M.R. James, Lafcadio Hearn, and Shirley Jackson. You will consider how the supernatural entities that appear in horror (ghosts, vampires, zombies etc.) can be seen to tell us about place and environment, expressing the complex relationship between people and the landscapes they inhabit. Using cultural geography as a backdrop for the course, students will examine the impact of horror on the way we think about and describe the threat of the natural world. A number of short readings will provide opportunities for weekly class discussions, written responses and brief presentations in English, and develop comprehension of the texts that accompany the course. Students will be expected to read excerpts and short stories in English on a weekly basis as preparation for in-class activities and presentations. Furthermore, this course aims to help you develop your analytical skills in working with English language texts, and audio-visual materials. サーギル ジェームズ クリストファー サーギル ジェームズ クリストファー 担当教員 所属 英語 担当教員 所属 英語 曜限 曜限 対象 対象
