Students will consider how these stories criticize nautical transport, slavery and the slave economy, colonialism, and human greed. This course is designed to engage students in interdisciplinary approaches to reading a text. This course also aims to teach students to deeply consider historical contexts when reading literature. Students who want to understand psychological, economic, or scientific aspects of literature are encouraged to take this course. Ethics in the Context of Major Religious Traditions The main objectives of this course are to gain some experience in reading and writing in English and to learn about major religious traditions and their relationship to the field of ethics. From the second scheduled class meeting, students will be expected to have read an assigned part of the book “An Interview with Prānavichāra about the Subject of Ethics” and to be prepared to answer some questions and/or to write a short essay during class time (in the classroom or online). In the case of conventional class meetings, the teacher is likely to provide additional or explanatory information before the questions and/or essay prompt are given. In the event of a class being done online, the questions and/or essay prompt will be given near the beginning of the allotted time period and the answers and/or essay will be due near the end of it; some supplementary materials such as written information and ideas from the teacher, extra articles for reading, and/or links to relevant YouTube sites will also be provided. The religions and/or philosophies touched upon during this course are Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Confucianism, Taoism, and legalism.
