In other words, we will study "Cli-Fi." Climate change is usually addressed from scientific, political, or social issues (e.g. poverty or food scarcity) perspectives, but in reality climate change and global warming have been important to science fiction since the turn of the 20th century. Through discussions, presentations, and written work, students will focus on how to approach climate change from an interdisciplinary standpoint, and develop their ideas about what steps society needs to take in the future. Futurology: Imagining the World of Tomorrow Futurology (or Futures Studies) involves the study of the past and present to make educated guesses about the future. It draws on both the arts and sciences as a field of inquiry. It does this by grappling with complex philosophical questions concerning economic, political, cultural, and technological change but also by analyzing scientific data to make forecasts and predictions. In this introductory course we will examine how the future has been imagined in the past eras but also in our own era. Interdisciplinary in nature, the course will refer to ideas expressed in popular culture and the humanities as well as scientific studies.
