You will read a variety of text such as newspaper articles, speeches, and short research papers during this term. It will help students to have a broad perspective on social issues and better understand current events in the world. You will also develop academic interests for the future research through the readings. Futurology: Imagining the World of Tomorrow Futurology (or Futures Studies) involves the study of the past and present to make educated guesses about the future. It draws on both the arts and sciences as a field of inquiry. It does this by grappling with complex philosophical questions concerning economic, political, cultural, and technological change but also by analyzing scientific data to make forecasts and predictions. In this introductory course we will examine how the future has been imagined in the past eras but also in our own era. Interdisciplinary in nature, the course will refer to ideas expressed in popular culture and the humanities as well as scientific studies.
