Students will read several short stories by American author Shirley Jackson such as "The Lottery" and "Flower Garden" and examine theoretical, political, and historical contexts that underpin the stories. In addition to the stories, they will be introduced to social criticism and cultural theory on race and politics from the 1940s and 1950s. In their discussions, presentations, and written work, students will focus on how to approach literature from an interdisciplinary standpoint, and how to deeply read a story for its context and multiple meanings. Final Report: 40%, Written assignments (Including Mid-term Report): 30%, In-class assignments and participation: 30% プリントを配布する。／Will distribute handouts 特に行わない。／Will not conduct guidance Travelers’ Tales about Japan After Japan’s opening to the world in the mid-19th century, many foreign visitors and residents published accounts of their experiences in the country. In this class, we will read excerpts from books about Japan that were published in Britain and the United States between about 1855 and 1914, and we will discuss what those writings reveal not only about Japan and foreigners’ perceptions of Japan but also about how people in general try to understand and describe unfamiliar countries and cultures. The reading passages will be taken from books available for free through the Internet Archive. Some of the passages will be chosen by the students based on their interests. Students will be graded based on attendance, preparation, class participation, and either a final examination, which will cover the vocabulary and content of the passages read in class, or a final paper, which will be due a few weeks after the semester ends.
