Taking a contemporary, thematic approach students will critically examine and consider authentic and semi-authentic texts in groups where texts will be revisited after in depth pre-class reading. The themes explored in class will be exclusively on contemporary British culture. At the end of this course it is expected that students will be able to critically consider and assess a wide range of contemporary topics of domestic and international significance. Students will find that the skills acquired in this class will assist in expressing themselves in other areas of their academic studies, and later in their professional lives. Assessment for this class will be based on evidence of completed homework reading (40%), weekly vocabulary quiz (10%), two forum-based presentations (25%), a final assessment (25%) and active class participation. In order to gain a top grade for this course students are expected to make an original and unique contribution to each class. /Will not conduct guidance 開講 授業科目名 (クラス指定セメスター型) New York Timesで世界を読む New York Timesに掲載された署名入り記事に注釈が付された教材を精読する。 /Will use the following textbook /Will not conduct guidance 開講 (クラス指定セメスター型) English Lectures on General Physics This course will provide lectures on a series of Physics topics selected to ensure a balance between presentation of basic concepts and terminology, diagrams and formulas as well as proper reasoning about the underlying principles and mechanisms, using adequate English language. Although mainly intended for students interested to major in sciences, effort is made to select stand-alone content, presented so that it could be accessible to those specializing in other areas as well. The main objective is to present students with practical, stimulating opportunities to experience English as a vehicular language (lingua franca) that future graduates will use for integrating into a multidisciplinary society and contributing to its technological advancement. Students will be challenged on two fronts: (i) comprehension of the studied Physics topics and (ii) mastering the use of appropriate English language to describe them from various scientifically-valid perspectives, analyze problems, provide solutions and envision applications. Attendance and participation in interactive activities with instructor and classmates: 30% Individual Assignments: 70% While emphasis in evaluation will not be on the mastering of the Physics content itself, highest grades will require a good performance with respect to both (i) and (ii) objectives. /Will not use textbook /Will not conduct guidance
