In this class, we will read excerpts from books about Japan that were published in Britain and the United States between about 1855 and 1914, and we will discuss what those writings reveal not only about Japan and foreigners’ perceptions of Japan but also about how people in general try to understand and describe unfamiliar countries and cultures. The reading passages will be taken from books available for free through the Internet Archive. Some of the passages will be chosen by the students based on their interests. Students will be graded based on attendance, preparation, class participation, and either a final examination, which will cover the vocabulary and content of the passages read in class, or a final paper, which will be due a few weeks after the semester ends.
