Working through a series of comparative case studies, your class activities will be based around group discussions, presentations, in-class readings and student-led work - each designed to help develop your verbal and analytic skills in English language. Students will examine folklore from a cross-cultural perspective, exploring folktales, ghost stories, myths and legends from the geographical East and West. As well as assessing the role of folklore from both contemporary and historical viewpoints, the class will also introduce students to methodological approaches in the investigation of folklore. You will be required to write a research paper and give short presentations in English, as well as to undertake various homework tasks throughout the course (readings, creative assignments, compiling research etc.). The class will be based on in-class discussion and presentation of ideas in English. Attendance, Participation and Engagement: 30% Presentation: 30% Research Paper: 40% 教科書は使用しない。／Will not use textbook 特に行わない。／Will not conduct guidance 楽園はどこにある―Ronald Blythe, Akenfield: Portrait of an English Village (1969)を読む 講義題目 授業の目標概要 あなたの楽園はどこにありますか。日本人の楽園はどこにあるのでしょう。イギリス人の楽園は村にあります。「愛すべき農村」のイメージ。都会と違って恐ろしいことは何も起きない、知らない者が侵入してくることもない、皆が皆をよく知っていて、親密な人間関係のなかで、多少の悶着も厄介ごとも、すべてユーモアと笑顔と、ゆるいキリスト教的モラルで乗り越えられていく、そういう居心地のいい楽園。そこで繰り返される生産のサイクル。春、夏、収穫、冬。今年も、来年も、いつまでも。いつかこんな薄汚れた都会を離れて、緑に囲まれたコテージに住み、そういう「本当に確実なもの、本当に大切なもの」を手に入れるんだ。都会に寓居するイギリス人はそうやって、永遠の楽園としてのカントリーライフを夢見ている。 『エイケンフィールド：あるイングランドの村の肖像 Akenfield: Portrait of an English Village』(1969) は、そういう「楽園」の実際の住民たちの談話を、作家ロナルド・ブライズ Ronald Blythe がまとめたものです。1960年代後半、戦後のイギリス社会が経験した大変革がようやく落ち着き、19世紀から続く大農業恐慌がようやく終わり、農村社会が豊かになり始めた頃、イングランドのある農村に住んでいた、実在の住民たちの声です。 話し言葉を書き起こしたものが多くの部分を占めているので、そういった部分はアカデミックな硬い英語ではありません。むしろ、この時代や地域に独特の言い回しや方言がある程度書き込まれているので、そのへんが面白いところです。世の中には、公的な文書や研究書、あるいは文学作品などの「真面目な」文章よりも、小説やエッセイなどの「気楽な」文章の方が圧倒的に多いわけで、そういう硬くない英文を読むための読解力や知識の習得を目標のひとつとしています。それから、授業内容は基本的にテキストの精読になります。テキストをきちんと精読するためには作法があり、それはそのテキストが「気楽な」エッセイであろうと「真面目な」研究論文であろうと、また千年前に書かれた古英語の文書だろうと、同じです。この「作法」をお伝えしたい、そういう授業です。 授業中の和訳に対する評価、および学期末レポート（3～4頁分の英文の和訳）。 プリントを配布する。／Will distribute handouts 特に行わない。／Will not conduct guidance 155教室 103教室 時間割コード 時間割コード 開講 授業科目名 （クラス指定セメスター型） 授業科目名 開講 （クラス指定セメスター型） 英語中級 英語中級 担当教員 サーギル ジェームズ クリストファー 担当教員 所属 堀越 庸一郎 英語 所属 曜限 教室 英語 月 2 曜限 教室 対象 理一(4,35-36) 対象 理一(4,35-36)
