The course will be organised around key ideas taken from the writings of Karl Marx (e.g. the commodity, fetishism, phantasmagoria), with each class used to explore a specific Marxist concept in relation to the spaces and cultures of capitalism. The course will make use of a series of interesting examples from popular culture as a basis for conducting discussions (in English) on capitalism’s role in the shaping of class, gender and race. The course will introduce students to a range of thinkers from across the academic world, developing their knowledge of how and where critical and cultural theory can be applied in the analysis of contemporary capitalism. A number of short readings will provide opportunities for class discussion and presentations, and will develop comprehension of the text itself. Students will be expected to read excerpts of texts and short articles in English on a weekly basis as preparation for in-class activities.
