We will emphasize multiple levels of comprehension, ranging from the appreciation of prose expression to the analysis of plot, literary structure, and character development. Each week students will examine a different instance of the Fortean, a term developed from the writings of Charles Fort (1874-1932), who published a number of popular works on the supernatural. From crop circles and UFOs to ghosts and telepathy, you will analyse the ways in which the supernatural has had a continued influence on our understanding of the world around us. You will be required to think critically about the relationship between paranormal phenomena and the specific geographies in which they are encountered, considering the role such beliefs might play in the development of the geographic imagination. What do strange encounters with the environment tell us about contemporary belief in the supernatural? Why are certain types of place still commonly believed to be cursed, haunted or magical? A number of short English-language readings will provide opportunities for class discussion and develop comprehension of the English text itself. Students will be expected to read excerpts, articles and short stories in English on a weekly basis in preparation for in-class activities and discussion. Weekly presentations will help students to improve their speaking, listening and critical thinking skills.
