Working through a series of comparative case studies, your class activities will be based around group discussions, screenings, in-class readings and student-led work - each designed to help develop your verbal, written and analytic skills in English language. Students will examine folklore from a cross-cultural perspective, exploring myths and legends from the geographical East and West. As well as assessing the role of folklore from both contemporary and historical viewpoints, the class will also introduce students to methodological approaches in the investigation of folklore. You will be required to write a research paper and give short presentations in English, as well as to undertake various homework tasks throughout the course (readings, creative assignments, compiling research etc.). Attendance, Participation and Engagement: 20% Research Paper: 50% Presentation: 30% 教科書は使用しない。 特に行わない。 Let's Read and Discuss The aim of this course is to help students improve their reading and communication skills in English, through a range of student-centred activities designed to stimulate responses and promote social interactions in the classroom, including pair/group work and discussion. We will read a contemporary British author Zadie Smith's novella, 'The Embassy of Cambodia' (2013) as the core textbook. Set in Willesden, north-west London, it is an absorbing story about the life of a young migrant worker from the Ivory Coast, filled with resonant imagery. It is hoped that carefully reading this novella together will help students to develop their reading fluency and to learn to enjoy authentic texts, as well as will open up new horizons for students.
