Students will read two short stories by American author Shirley Jackson, "The Lottery" and "Flower Garden" and examine each in two different contexts, theoretical and socio-political. In addition to the stories, they will be introduced to social criticism and cultural theory on race and politics from the 1940s and 1950s. In their discussions, presentations, and written work, students will focus on how to approach literature from an interdisciplinary standpoint, and how to deeply read a story for its context and multiple meanings. Final Presentation: 40%, Written assignments: 30%, In-class assignments and participation: 30% プリントを配布する。 特に行わない。 Fortean Geographies: critical engagements with supernatural spaces This short comprehension-based course will introduce students to a series of examples of strange and supernatural geographies. Each week students will examine a different instance of the Fortean, a term developed from the writings of Charles Fort (1874-1932), who published a number of popular works on the supernatural. From crop circles and UFOs to ghosts and telepathy, you will analyse the ways in which the supernatural has had a continued influence on our understanding of the world around us. You will be required to think critically about the relationship between paranormal phenomena and the specific geographies in which they are encountered, considering what role such beliefs might play in the development of the geographic imagination. What do strange encounters with the environment tell us about contemporary belief in the supernatural? Why are certain types of place still commonly believed to be cursed, haunted or magical? A number of short English-language readings will provide opportunities for class discussion and develop comprehension of the English text itself. Students will be expected to read excerpts, articles and short stories in English on a weekly basis in preparation for in-class activities.
