Basic concepts and terminology, diagrams and formulas as found in textbooks will be studied in conjunction to applying a scientist's critical thinking toolkit, using adequate English language. The course is expected to be useful to not only students intending to major in sciences, but to all who would like to develop an understanding about how to read and evaluate science stories from mass-media or other sources. The main objective is to present students with practical, stimulating opportunities to experience English as a vehicular language (lingua franca) that future graduates will use for integrating into a multidisciplinary society and contributing to its technological advancement. Students will be challenged on three fronts: (i) comprehension of the studied scientific topics, (ii) mastering the use of appropriate English language to describe them from various angles and (iii) developing critical thinking ability by evaluating the claims made from viewpoints of logical consistency to scientific facts, acceptability of evidence from viewpoints of authority and statistical significance, adequacy of experiments and models. Attendance and participation in interactive activities with instructor and classmates: 30% Individual Assignments: 70% 教科書は使用しない。 特に行わない。 Critical Discussion and Thinking The purpose of this class is to build students’ English language reading and thinking skills beyond simple description to a more critical and analytical point. Each week students will focus on one topic and critically examine and consider an English language text in a group. At the end of this course it is expected that students will be able to critically consider and assess a range of contemporary topics of domestic and international significance, and be able to reflect better on their own culture. Students will find that the skills acquired in this class will help them to express themselves in other areas of their academic studies; it is hoped the class will be an encouragement to see English language as an investment for the future. This course will be taught exclusively in English. Assessment for this class will be based on four aspects: (i) a series of role sheets filled out for the discussion circle (50% approx.) (ii) weekly vocabulary test (15%) (iii) one in-class presentation (15%) (iv) final examination (20%)
