It draws on both the arts and sciences as a field of inquiry. It does this by grappling with complex philosophical questions concerning economic, political, cultural, and technological change but also by analyzing scientific data to make forecasts and predictions. In this introductory course we will examine how the future has been imagined in the past eras but also in our own era. Interdisciplinary in nature, the course will refer to ideas expressed in popular culture and the humanities as well as scientific studies. Upon completing the course, students will be familiar with key debates in futurology, possess their own viewpoints about emerging developments, and be more adept at envisioning and understanding social, environmental, and technological change. Writing Assignment: 40% Final Exam: 40% Participation: 20% 教科書は使用しない。 特に行わない。 New Windows on America: Reading the Atlantic Articles The goal is to read articles in English (specifically articles from The Atlantic Magazine) to understand current issues of the U.S. in English. Students need to read an article a week to gain information in English and to be familiar with various issues in English. Through this course, students will improve their reading skills qualitatively as well as quantitatively through various activities in classes and at home.
